The Blönduós Academic Center (Þekkingarsetur) was established February 29, 2012 in Kvennaskólinn, the former Women´s College in Blönduós, Northwest Iceland. From 2008 - 2011, the Hólar University College was operated in the same building.
Þekkingarsetur is a non-profit institution founded by 9 members: Blönduós and Húnavatnshreppur municipalities, Landsvirkjun, Hólar University, the Icelandic Salmon Center, Textile Museum, and Icelandic Textile Center in Blönduós, Farskóli- Distance Learning Center in Sauðárkrókur, and the Association of Local Authorities in Northwest Iceland (SSNV).
The formal opening was held on November 12, 2012, the 100-year anniversary of the Women's School building. The Ministry of Education and the Cultural Ministry formalized an agreement with Þekkingarsetur at the opening.
The main goal of Þekkingarsetur is to promote education, research, and innovation in northwest Iceland. Þekkingarsetur employees are working in areas of research important to the region: salmon, coastal culture, and textiles. Þekkingarsetur collaborates on distance education services and projects regarding regional development.
